The BCA allows "Performance Based Alternative Solutions," and Fire Engineers now often use two Australian Standards to make a full specification that includes requirements for a complete door assembly and a test method that lets actual leakage rates be measured. People often talk about AS6905:2007 and AS1530.7:2007 as the two standards.

AS6905:2007 - Smoke Doors: This standard lists the requirements for building, installing, and identifying a complete smoke door assembly. This standard also tells you what the highest permitted leakage rates are for both single and double leaf door assemblies. The test technique described in AS1530.7 is used to find out how much smoke can leak through a door assembly.

AS1530.7:2007 – Methods for fire tests on building materials, components and structures. Part 7 This standard tells you what you need to do to build, install, and identify a full smoke door assembly. This standard also tells you what the greatest allowed leakage rates are for door assemblies with one or two leaves. The test method in AS1530.7 shows how much smoke can get through a door assembly.

What are Fire Doors and Smoke Doors?

Fire Doors and Smoke Doors are a critical safety feature of any building in which people work or visit, as they offer resistance to the spread of fire and smoke, limiting its effect whilst allowing enough time for occupants to evacuate to a place of safety.a prompt and efficient manner.

A fire door is a door with a fire-resistance rating used as part of a passive fire protection system to reduce the spread of fire and smoke between separate parts of a building or structure and to enable a safe exit from the location.

A smoke door is a solid core door that helps provide a physical barrier impeding the spread of toxic fumes and smoke from one room to another or between separate compartments of a building.
