Fire Safety FAQ's

What is the purpose of a fire safety statement?

When the owner of a building signs a fire safety statement, they are saying that the building’s fire safety measures have been checked and are still meeting the standards. FirstStopFire can ensure and certify compliance.

That is the role of the accredited fire safety practitioner. Only specialist technical expert can verify that the building meets the relevant minimum standard of performance.

Fire safety measures include items of equipment, forms of construction, or fire safety strategies that are provided in a building to promote the safety of people using the building in the event of a fire.

It can include items such as portable fire extinguishers, fire hydrants, fire sprinklers, fire detection and alarm systems, and lightweight construction.

A fire safety plan outlines all the necessary actions to ensure the building’s safety in the event of a fire. This includes schedules of inspections, maintenance, replacement, and reporting. They’ll be different for each building.

A supplementary fire safety statement is a declaration by or on behalf of a building owner that an accredited fire safety practitioner has assessed, inspected and verified the performance of each critical fire measure.

AS 1851 sets the requirements for fire safety systems and equipment to be routinely serviced, inspected, tested, and given preventative maintenance as part of their regular maintenance.

Wha is the diference between smoke alarm and smoke detector?

A smoke alarm is a self-contained device with a built-in siren that goes off right away in homes and apartments when it recognises smoke. In commercial buildings, a smoke detector is part of a bigger, more complicated fire alarm system. When it detects smoke, it sends a signal to a central fire alarm panel.

In case of an emergency, like a fire, natural disaster, or other dangerous event, there should be a thorough plan for how to get people from a dangerous area or building to a safe place quickly and safely. This plan is called an evacuation plan.

Yes, there are different types of fire extinguishers based on the type of fuel used. Using the wrong fire extinguisher can make a fire worse or put people in real danger, so it’s important to know the different types of fires (like electrical, cooking oil, paper/wood, and flammable liquids). The label on the extinguisher will tell you which one to use.

A fire safety plan outlines all the necessary actions to ensure the building’s safety in the event of a fire. This includes schedules of inspections, maintenance, replacement, and reporting. They’ll be different for each building.

A fire compliance order is an official letter from the city council to the owner of a building telling them what they need to do and how they can improve it to make sure it meets fire safety standards and is safe for everyone who lives or works there.

The National Construction Code (NCC) and other NSW laws spell out what fire hose reels must have, especially for businesses and factories. Whether a fire reel is required relies on the type of building, its size, and the fire risks that are present. Part 10 of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Regulation 2021 and the AS 2441 standard detail out the requirements.
